River Architects was engaged by the owner of Cat Rock, the historic Osborn Estate. River architects provided design and construction administration services for the Gardener’s Residence, Office, and Workshop that will serve the full-time, resident gardener and his staff.

The Gardener’s House entailed conversion of a 1950’s factory-made “kit” log home to a Carpenter Gothic-inspired structure.

Later scope of work also included the renovation and expansion of the existing barn as the Gardener’s Office, renovation of the Carriage House, upgrades to the utilities and the grounds. River Architects proposed vernacularly appropriate exterior improvements to the Carriage House, including the new masonry stairs to the second floor residence, and replacement windows and doors. We were also engaged to oversee the slate and copper restoration, and interior renovations.

River Architects also designed all-new Art Gallery with modern massing and minimalism that incorporated the vernacular stone and weathered wood salvaged from various out buildings. The Gallery would display the Client’s contemporary art collection in modern, yet vernacular setting. This new structure was designed with high-performance Passive House principles, minimizing the need for heating and cooling, and providing an optimized climate for art
