This basement renovation of a 4-story, 8-family brownstone building in Prospect Heights required us to design guest quarters as an extension of the first floor apartment with private stairs and provide separate storage and laundry rooms for the tenants.
To alleviate the feeling of being in a basement, bright colors, illuminating walls, indirect lighting and a sunken garden patio were designed. To lighten the drudgery of doing laundry, we proposed to express the oil tank room as a giant detergent box and to provide resin-dipped translucent shirt and skirt as light diffusers.
